I know, I owe you guys a NYC part 3, I am so slow. I finished the two projects I was working on for publication and I am so happy to be done with those! Now I am swatching and sketching for the book whenever the kids let me. Last night I caught up on a bunch of Petite Purls work, and I wanted to share with you our latest free pattern (designed and knit by the wonderful Thomas Wermuth, Allegra’s dad!) which I was very happy to photograph.

We’ve planned a trip to Disney World with my sister and her two boys for about a year now, and I am very excited about it. I somehow (magically) secured our hotel room with a view of the castle for 40% off, counting myself lucky or guessing they are giving deals to drum up business due to the economy. Not the best time for a vacation but we used sky-miles to pay for the entire families plan tickets and with the discount the worst part will be paying for food. Good thing I am on a yarn diet (I only bought two skeins at SAFF). I’m having fun photographing the girls for some Winter Petite Purls shoots. Loving all the lovely patterns I’ve gotten to see in person, such impeccable knitting too. I’ve been practicing my photograhy skills, which has brought me the opportunity to photograph others peoples children professionally, which is GREAT for scoping out potential Petite Purls models. Here is a familiar face from our fall issue, M.

I often will received e-mails from publishers with a list of new release or revised books they are promoting, and this time I was surprised to see not only knitting/crafty books, but a selection of photography books as well. One particular book description caught my eye, “Fast Track Photographer” by Dane Sanders. Reading the book is a bit like getting advice from a career counselor, a life coach, a business adviser, and an inspirational speaker. I have been so delighted by the contents of the book that I just had to share it with you. As many of you know I’ve been really getting into photography for the past 2 years. I take lots of photos for my own pattern line and for Petite Purls. I’m now wanting to expand my business into the world of children’s portraits to beef up my portfolio and bring in a little more income. We all know that very few get rich on knitting patterns, so it helps to have a bag of tricks and other various marketable skills.

So the babies are definitely no longer babies, but I can pretend LG is! With her short little locks and cherub face, she could still pass as “baby” or so I like to tell myself. BG had her 3rd birthday just a few days ago. It’s a lot of fun having a 3 year old, at this age they really get the whole birthday thing.

I recommend you at least read this part of the tutorial to get your brain thinking, Part 3 will still totally apply to you if you are using your DSLR in Auto mode, or if you are using a point and shoot camera. Let me get this stuff out of the way here before getting into the meaty beats about how to use light most effectively.
DSLR Camera Modes (Auto vs Manual etc)
Lets take a moment to talk about using a semi-pro or pro camera like the Nikon D80/90. When I first got my fancy camera nearly 3 years ago, I was using it in Auto mode, and sometimes when I am very tired I still do. The scary truth is I’ve used my camera in Auto for many of my published photos, and they not only turned out well, but really amazing sometimes. I felt when I first started using the camera, that it was far more important for me to focus on my use of natural light, composition and styling then it was to stress about how in the world to have the photo come out properly exposed. Proper exposure is a beast, it’s confusing and intimidating. At-least it was to me. All those numbers on all those dials. I had just had a baby, I was sleep deprived, lets just keep it simple shall we? Maybe this helps you not be so intimated by those “pro” cameras, truth is due to technology they are not very scary at all.
