Knit One, Knit All

I had heard a while ago a possible Elizabeth Zimmermann book based on some unplublished patterns, probably on the Schoolhouse Press Newsletter. I had soon forgotten all about it until I saw Susan B. Anderson mention it on twitter. I jumped right over to the Schoolhouse Press website and found and ordered it. I don’t remember which day I ordered it but I think it was only like two days ago, and the book arrived in the  mail already! Amazon.com doesn’t seem to have it yet (said 2-3 weeks when I checked) and I would rather order direct from the source anyway.

60 Quick Baby Knits

I’m excited to tell you about my latest pattern, which is in a book! Seriously, you can go to Barnes and Noble and find my design in a book! GAH! How exciting is that? I think every knitter I know was pretty excited about the first “60 Quick Knits” book, which features all Cascade 220 patterns. This book is a second in the series with a focus all on baby stuff, knit in the superwash version of Cascade 220. There is a wall in Cast on Cottage of cascade 220, that is 3 times the height and width of me. It’s a literal rainbow of color. Cascade offers every shade you could ever desire. I’m planning to use some of it in the future again soon.

New Music Thursday: Dean Fields

New Music Thursday: Dean Fields

I was a late adopter to Facebook (and sort of to twitter though when I joined it, it was just beginning to get big). For facebook I was less interested in it because it became right away, a very odd mix of social networks. I had co-workers, high school classmates I had not seen or even heard from in over 10 years, knitters, “mommy” friends and then family. I never could figure out who I was speaking too, so I didn’t have a lot to say. I still don’t talk as much on facebook as I do other places but I’ve gotten more used to the broad spectrum of people.

More recently a high school alumni posted that he was playing a gig in Atlanta, promoting his new album. Back in high school, Dean was well known for running track and for his curly hair. My memories of him are of a very smart (and cute) guy who you couldn’t help but like.

I’ve seen these sort of posts on other blogs and I have to admit it’s often led me to very cool things, so I thought I would share some of my favorites.

One day when I am very rich I will fly to Australia just so I can shop at Witchery and Witchery Kids

Florabella photoshop actions and textures are amazing

Woollybottoms makes the most wonderful up-cycled “longies” and slippers. This is targeted to those who cloth diaper, but they are fantastic for any baby or toddler. The best winter pants on earth and the most amazing baby slippers I have ever used (and I’ve tried loads). These are green with a capital G. The women who makes them is really sweet too. Get on the e-mail list to be alerted of stockings, everything is one of a kind and sells fast!

Aimee Ray, who designed my adorable pixie logo is an amazingly crafty women with a wonderful aesthetic. If you like woodland animals, you will flip over her etsy shop.

The Knitgrrl Guide to Professional Knitwear Design

For those of you who have been following my blog for a long time, you’ve watched my journey to becoming a professional knitwear designer. You may have seen me back when I was even learning to knit in 2004, experimenting with cables lace and other various techniques. I designed my first pattern in 2007 when BG was just 6 months old. I started out by measuring a similar top in the silhouette I was designing, probably something from Old Navy. I looked online at other patterns to make sure my ratio of sleeve/back/front stitches seemed correct for up by the neck. I was flying by the seat of my pants with no guidance at all. I was always intimidated by the idea of submitting to magazines or book publishers. Now 2.5 years later things are a bit different, I’ve had a lot of experiences and I know a lot more then I did then but there is still a lot to learn.
